Avoiding Alcohol and Managing Stress during Court as a Single-Parent

Why no booze and stuff?

Some helpful personal-life tips for living through litigation

Yes, I put "no-nos" on the picture above. No, I don't expect you to be a self-righteous monk with a halo of piety. So, am I being a prudish zealot? Nope. It is a temporary measure, the alcohol part anyway. You should dump all your alcohol if you are in the throws of litigation for several reasons. But first, why I did it and why it was one of the best decisions I made at the beginning of my start to single-parentdom. Make no mistake-this is war. You don't need a better lawyer, or sometimes one at all, but you do need every advantage in mind and body.

Among other things, I tossed all my booze the second I got back to my ransacked home (the story on that here) because I needed every shred of brain power I could muster.

→It is expensive. Why drink your money away?

→Alcohol is a depressant drug, it will inhibit your clarity when filling forms and composing documents.

→Drinking to 'relieve' stress is like trying to put out a fire with gasoline. You are most likely going to do something asinine, dumb and will later regret.

Take these things instead...

☼ L-Theanine - As a chewable or Softgel capsule, L-Theanine is a free-form amino acid naturally produced by your body. It is the substance responsible for making you very calm AND focused. It rocks and its easy to find in supplements. Don't take before bed though. Good for doing brain work and whilst in court.

☼ GABA - Otherwise known as Gama Aminobutyric Acid, is another free-form amino acid produced by your body just before Melatonin. It can make you a bit sleepy and goofy. Usually taken for stress-relief, I recommend taking at the end of the day when you don't have to have intelligent conversations. Easily found in chewable tablets over the counter.

☼ Apple-Cider Vinegar - It stinks, but it calms me way down knocks me out consistently every night without cycling. It has a host of beneficial effects on your mind and body and its cheap. I've found the BEST recipe is 2-3 tablespoons of Organic, Unfiltered & Unpasteurized non-GMO Apple-Cider Vinegar, 1 tablespoon of real, Organic Maple Syrup, 1 teaspoon of Organic Ground Celyon Cinnamon and 3/4 cup of boiling water. Do this before bed or at the end of your day.

☼ Meditation - Yes, seriously. Its free, its effective and you already have everything you need! I'm not talking about transcendental meditation. There are many ways of meditating which I will elaborate on in depth in a separate post. Taking some time to breath and think deeply on why you feel the way you do. It can do amazing things.

What happened to me?

Not once, but 3 times my ex called social services on me out of spite in order to try and discredit me and take the kids away. I was interviewed twice, the kids once. Each time they found the allegations totally bunk. I would actually invite them to my home, tell them all about my decision not to drink and come to my place to verify it. They never did come, in fact they were so blown away by my complete transparency that they treated me very well.

What about those other 'proclivities'?

Look I'm not here just to tell you my opinion; opinions are like armpits, we all have them and they all stink. However, in the context being in the early stages of, or even deep into court and litigation, alcohol, substance abuse and adult entertainment will not help your cause. "But its my right," you say - That's fine, its your right to be a foul-mouth grumpy jerk with a sauerkraut fetish too. Very much like wearing spandex, just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Just think, would your malevolent ex like to try to discredit you in court? What would they use against you?

What are your kids exposed to or potentially exposed to when in your presence? I managed (at first) to get my any and all of my ex's parenting time disallowed from taking place at her sister's place because it came to light that there was regular marijuana use there as well as 2nd & 3rd hand cigarette smoke.

Don't imagine for a second that illicit-drug use will be good for your case, least of all the kiddos. If this is a problem, get help. Getting help also shows the court that you are willing to do everything in your power to accommodate a good life for your kids.

As for 'Adult Entertainment', well, again its your right to look at what want. We all have rights, but insisting on them at the detriment of others is a huge faux-pas. Studies have shown that it is more addictive than most drugs, and just like drugs it has repercussions; psychological and social ones. As well, it can lead down a dark path of viewing and collecting content that is flat-out illegal not to mention horrifically disgusting. I'm not a fan of people being objectified. If looked at subjectively from the courts point of view, should the children's safety in either parent's cases be in question, this is one variable that could potentially tip the scales.

This is a tough period in your life. Don't underestimate the power of libation-fueled stupidity my friends. The above advice saved my bacon in a BIG way, I hope it helps you too.
